What is a project?

If you're an artist or a label, the way to use Qrates to create your own custom vinyl or audio cassette is through a project. There are 3 different types of projects you can create using our website

  1. Crowdfunding
A crowdfunding project can be started without any upfront manufacturing fees and must reach its goal amount of pledges in order for manufacturing to begin. If your project doesn't reach its goal, its backers are not charged, and the project will not go into production.

  1. Make & Sell
Make and Sell projects have the option of creating a pre-order period before retail sales. The benefit of a pre-order period is that you will be able to collect pre-orders from customers through your Qrates project page while your project is being manufactured. Unlike crowdfunding projects, customers who order from a Make & Sell project are guaranteed a record/cassette as it does not have a pledge goal amount to reach. Make & Sell projects require upfront payment to start the manufacturing process.

  1. Make Only
With Make Only, you can order your vinyl pressing or cassette production without publishing a Crowdfunding or Make & Sell project on Qrates. Records and cassettes can be shipped to one location directly from our production partners.

Selling Inventory with Qrates Storage

Additionally, if you choose to stock inventory in your storage after your pre-order or crowdfunding project, the remaining inventory can be sold at a retail price and will be displayed as Sell Catalog on your project page. When you run out of records/cassettes, your project will be labeled as "sold out."
